Website Design, Business Cards, SEO and stupidity

Why Business Consultants think, that most important issue starting a business is to have a website designed by graphic artist and business cards for your business? How can website or business cards make you money? I haven’t yet figured it out. Maybe they can explain? So, they will give you a business start-up grant, but you don’t see the money. They just commission their selected web designer and graphic designer to design your business logo, website and business cards. What about corporate blog or more needed mobile merchant WAP pages? Why they are not commisioning those?

So, you have a well designed website and thousands of business cards in your pocket. According to market studies, you should be rich internet entrepreneur by now!!! So, those business consultants tell you, that you haven’t yet paid for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) specialist. So, you want the best and recently had got an e-mail, who will guarantee your number one position in the Google. So you will contact to find out, that your website is not built search engine friendly and asking more money to rebuild your website. So, now you have offered to be number one on Google, if somebody uses keywords like: “high quality”, “best product”, “lowest price”, “best service”, etc. So, now you have new website where those keywords are repeated in your page header and written somewhere hidden, that this specialist explained to be METATAGS. But you are not near to promised number one position in Google!!! Now new people are telling you, that you need to be listed in Internet Business Directories. So you start to spend again paying £20-£60 each time somebody will list your website in their useless directory. After few months of spending, you still do not have visitors!!! You will give up your business and go back to work without any understanding, what went wrong. You did exactly as told and as everyone promised to you to be Internet millionaire. You believed them, as they showed you, how much money they are making from Internet. Did you figure out, that it’s yours and millions of similar people’s money, they are robbing?

Maybe you should have partner with Internet professional to develop your online business?

I understand your point. A web page of a business card is not the most important part of your business. Your product/service and your clients are.

Sadly presentation is the catalyst that gets the client and the product/service in the same room. Poor presentation rarely leads to a curious client. Whereas good presentation usually leads to potential buys, even if the product/service being offered sucks.

We live in a world where people trust appearances too much and make judgments on quality upon them. We can either sit and complain about it or figure out ways to take this into our advantage.

I think that if you take search engine optimization and marketing seriously it can really benefit a business, but in my opinion it is always best to do this “in-house”. This way not only are your marketing your site, but you are marketing yourself on the social web.

It is sad that SEO/SEM “experts” use the fact that not many people know about the industry to scam people out of their money.

    Veiko,

I think you have been misguided by some Business Consultant(s).

Graphic artists don’t design websites, they design posters. Websites are designed by computer programmers.

You wouldn’t hire an accountant to be your lawyer, right? Why would you hire a graphic artist to design your website?

Besides, a website will not give you any money (unless you own Amazon.com). A website is a marketing tool, advertisement; it is not a cashier.

People need to ask more question before they hire a computer programmer.

This perspective could save thousands of people from investing millions of dollars supporting other’s businesses while trying to “make their internet millions” online. BCs, websites, SEO, PPC and marketing can be effective, but require effort, education, time and diligence to be truly efficient & effective. Professionals can help, but you should always remain involved, and realistic.

As they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

does anyone knows if there is any other information about this subject in other languages?

  16. Personal Trainer Says:

Good post. I think anybody who spends hours working on their website and promoting is less likely to tell anybody about it.

If we went through all the pain and re-editing meta tags, etc. etc. etc. we’d rather have other people have to go through it for themselves.

  17. Promote Me Says:

A little hard to read your post but you did well, I’d never be able to speak so fluently in another language.
I’m a marketing noob, so I take it the solution is to start it all whilst or before you are building your website?
